Movie vs. Book

After viewing the GoodNight Mr. Tom movie, choose two things you noticed where different between what the author explains and what the movie reveals. Explain in 4 to 5 sentences which description you prefered and why.

  1. Good Night Mister Tom:

2 things from the book that I noticed were different to the movie were:

    1. In the book, when Willie's mom summons him back to London, Willie's mom lives in an old, broken down apartment with no electricity. In the movie, when Willie comes home, he enters a lit up, standard apartment. I prefer the book description, because all the neighbors think that the apartment is abandoned, and the description in the book shows that, whilst in the movie, the neighbors would hear noises coming from the apartment which would show that it was not abandoned.

2.In the movie, Little Wierworld is portrayed as a village where all the houses are close together, whilst in the book, Little Wierworld is spaced out on the hills and everything is furthur apart. I prefer the book version because to me it is a more realistic version of the country side in the olden days.

  2. 2 things that were different between the book and the movie were:

1)In the book, they say the house willie used to live in was very old and smelly. By reading the book I imagine the house was broken down and it was like the slum but in the movie, the house looks normal like the house people live in. I prefer the book version because they have more detail about the how the house was under a bad condition.

    2) In the movie, on the second day after Willie came back to london, his mother gave him his favorite breakfast boiled egg and soldier (I think). In the book, Willie's mother was always mean and abusive and not once nice to him. I think I like the little bit of the movie when his mom was nice because reading all about his mother abusing him in one chapter make me really sad.

  3. The two things I noticed different between the movie and the book was:

    1) In the book when wille went back to london because of his mother he forgets the belt his mom used to whip him whith and he hoped his mom forgot and she did. In the movie it showed that she knew that he forgot and said that he did it purposely.

    2) In the book at the end it wrote that Carrie and Willie went to the river together but in the movie they didn't have that part I don't know why.

I like the book better because in the book there are more events which happen and in the book they describe it more. I also like the book better because in the book you can read people's thoughts but in the movie you don't know what is going on in their mind.

  4. I had noticed two things that were different from the "Goodnight Mr. Tom" book and the movie.

Just by watching the movie, I feel as though Will's mother was nicer than when I was reading the book. She also made him his favourite food which was very abnormal for the abusive and hot-tempered mother. I prefer the book because the movie makes Will's mother kind of awkward and the book is more exciting and more interesting.

Also, another thing I have noticed is that the movie didn't exactly show Will and Zach's relationships together compared to the book. The movie had left out Will and his friends playing a lot and having meetings. So when zach had died, It was a bit weird that Will was very upset for Zach's death like they don't really know each other well. I prefer the book because it show how Will's and other peoples' relationships develop as the time flies.

I prefer the book more than the movie because it is more descriptive and exciting. Normally some people read the book first before the movie so they can understand it and I am sometimes like that. The movie is kind of confusing because it skips important parts and mixes the character profiles a bit. Overall, the book was very satisfying and I want to read more 8)

  5. he two most difference that was what separates the movie from the book is:

    1. When Ms. Beech brings Willie inside her house there was a lot of difference in there first there was the baby but it had no tape on its mouth which doesn’t bring up the tension. Then second was when his mother got angry at him but in the movie she got angry at how Willie was associated with a Jew which was Zach and just put will in a small room under the stairs. But in the book she got angry at the line “ Jesus was a Jew” and she got so angry she hit Willie with an unknown object so hard he became unconscious and then but him in the room under the stairs. The third thing I noticed in the house was that in the morning for some reason she was all nice and made Willie’s favorite breakfast.

    2. The second thing I noticed which made me think straight away that the book was a lot better was that the movies skipped a lot of important part of the movie like Willie’s and Zach’s bond. In the movie they also made lots of mistakes like how Mr. Tom told Willie his mom id dead but in the book it was a lady who told Willie his mom is dead. The movie is also not very exciting and interesting like the book because the book is more detailed and the movie just skips some parts that could of made the movie more interesting.

  6. The 2 most difference that seperated the book from the movie is:
    1. I have just noticed this in this book for the first time. The book was much more detailed and was much more interesting than the movie. The movie skipped a lot of things that were mentioned in the book but didnt in the movie. Things like when will went back to his mom. When he went in the baby was just in this box and with out the tape on. It really did not bring the tension up. When the mother was angry at him there were two different reasons. One was because Will mixed with a Jew and 2 Girls which his mom did not let him do that. Also after that night in the movie suddenly she just made willies favorite breakfast which was kind off weird.

    2. The second thing that i noticed was which made me think straight away that the book was more detailed and the movie skipped a lot of important parts of the book like when Zach and Wills friendship. Also when Mr.Tom had a dream that something bad happened to Will which was pretty important because he started to know that something bad was happening to will so then he went back to wills home. Also i think the book was more interesting because we read it first. Also the book takes a little more longer than the book. So after all i think reading a book would be better but after you read the book we should go watch the movie and see which one is better.

  7. 2 things I noticed that are different in the book and movie is.........

    1) In the book when Will came home with his mother he saw a baby with a tape on it's mouth but in the movie it was just the baby crying without any tape on it's mouth. I prefer the movie more because I think it is quite cruel for Will's mom to put tape on the baby's mouth just because she wants it to be quiet.

    2) The second thing I noticed is, in the book it told us that when Mrs. Hartriage had her baby she didn't teach anymore but in the movie when she had her baby she still came and taught. I like the book better because i think the movie doesn't really make sense. Mrs Hartriage had her baby and if she came to teach who would be looking after her baby "little Peggy."

I like both the movie and the book because in the book it gives us lots of description and details. In the movie Will's mom isn't so mean and scary like the book describes which made more sense because Will is her son and she should have some love for him.

  8. Two things that were different in the book and the movie:

    1) The first thing that I noticed was when Willie was captured. In the movie, Mr. Tom just decided to go and get Willie because he didn't get any post cards but in the book, Mr. Tom had a bad dream. I prefere the book because I feel that Mr. Tom's dream was important because it show the connection Willie and Mr. Tom had with each other.

    2) The second thing I noticed was that Willie didn't go to see Geoffery in the movie. I also think that Geoffery was a big help to Willie because he had a part in helping Willie accept Zach's death. I thought that Willie going to see Geoffery was a important part in the book because it showed what happen to people during world war 2 and it was because of Geoffery keeping his friend's pipe that Willie decided to ride Zach's bike.

2 Differences in the movie and the book-

    1) In the book when Willie is very depressed about Zach’s death he goes to Geoffrey to continue painting and trying to forget about him. In the movie Geoffrey isn’t even mention and instead of that happening he goes back to his house where Mr. Tom decides to fix up Zach’s bike and give it to Willie.
    2) Also when Willie goes back to his mother in the movie she gives him his favorite dish for breakfast, eggs and toast. In the book it doesn’t mention anything about Willie and his mother after the beating at night until Mr. Tom finds him.

I think the book is better, more detailed and also more interesting because the book spans over a 2 year period but the movie is compressed into small but more important parts of the book. The book also has more things and scenes included so it is more interesting.

1.) A difference that I spotted from the book and the movie is that in the book everu thing was sort af dragging on and the author had detailed things specificly and clearly. In the movie things were missed out and detail was missing. The movie was pretty srtaight forward.

2.) Another difference is that in the book there was almost an entire chapter about Geoffry and how much alike he is with Willie. in the movie there is nothing about Geoffry or his art lessons at all.

    Descriptions:

I prefer the book because it is much more detiled and their is the small evnts that make the book more interesting. The movie is just the main events and it doesn't allow us to think about this where as the book you would usually stop at the end of the chapter.

  12. The book is way better than the movie. Because the book has more detail so the reader can understand the story well but in movies they don’t explain well and the audience won’t understand why something happened! So it is hard for the audience to understand why suddenly something happened in the movie. For example in the movie it doesn’t say why Tom suddenly went to check for Willie who is in London. And also in the movie it doesn’t show the part Willie talking with a man in the train when Willie went back to London to meet his mom. From this I learned that books are better than movies because it has more detail!

  13. The different between the movie and the book.
The book is better than the movie because the movie skips alot of parts that is in the book and the boook is also more discriptive.

    The 2 differents:

1,The movie skipped one chapter of the book which is "The sea the sea". The cahpter is actually really important becasue it shows how Will's relationship and Zack's relationship became closer before Zach die. It shows that after their relationsip had became so close Zach die and it shows how Will is so hurt from Zac's death.

2, The oter thing is Geff. He was missing in the movie and I like it better in the book because Geff and help Will got over Zach in the story and He and Will also hve some relationship. It is also imprtant because Geff shows that lots of people had to suffer throw World WAR 2.

  14. 1. I first thing I spot the difference between the book and the movie is that the movie have cutted some parts of the story and also some of the characters out, just to make the movie simple.

    2. the second thing i notice is that when willie and mrs beech went in to the house the baby doesnt have a tape covering his mouth.

  15. 2 Things that I spotted that is difference between the movie and the book.

1 When his mom asked willie to come back to london they were walking back home and the when they went in the home the books said that the rooms were dark and no lights could not be turned on but in the movie willie's mom just walked in and turned on the lights.

2 They cut out many characters and chapters like the chapter when willie has his 12 birthday it was cut out too mabye to make the movie not too long or some thing.

I think that the book is better than the movie because it has more detail than the movie and more interesting to read with excitement

  16. The major thing that got me was when William met Zach in the book compared to when William met Zach in the movie. The whole idea was that William, when he first came to Little Wierwold, he was very shy and timid and wouldn't come across as a boy whom openly talked and introducted himself. Plus the fact that Zach had a bike at the start in the movie. the story of the bike is the main reason how William finally finds closure from Zachs death. the book is one of my favourites but as movie adaptations go it could have, should have been alot better

  17. I preferred the book so much more than the film, because the latter skipped three chapters, and it had way too much Tom Oakley in it.
Zach seemed to come in a bit random in the film, and Carrie, Ginnie and George were barely there. Willie makes such a big deal of Zach's death, when he barely knows him. I found Tom so annoying, and basically, positively hated the film and never want to see it again!

  18. i prefer the book version of goodnight mr tom because it allows us to fell the horrid and the happiness and love that william is feeling and also in the novel it lets us have an imagery of what the characters may look like because of the description given.
